Klaviyo Alternatives for Small Business: Real Prices at 1k, 5k, and 20k Contacts

The honest pricing math on Omnisend, MailerLite, and Brevo at 1k, 5k, and 20k contacts, plus the switching costs nobody puts in the comparison table

Three thin vertical light beams of varying height against pure black, one beam glowing orange

The top Google result for klaviyo alternatives is a blog post written by one of the alternatives. The second result is too. Every list ranks the publisher first. That's not a conspiracy, it's just how vendor content works, and it means the pricing pages you've been comparing were curated to make one specific platform look obvious.

We implement email and SMS systems for ecommerce operators across Shopify and WooCommerce. We don't resell any of these tools, don't take affiliate fees, and have migrated stores both toward and away from Klaviyo. This piece is the decision tree we actually use in client work, with the prices stated as the vendors publish them.

TL;DR

  • Klaviyo's paid plans start at $20/month for 251-500 active profiles per its June 2026 pricing page.

  • MailerLite starts at $10/month for 500 subscribers; Omnisend at $16/month for 500 contacts, per Omnisend's own comparison.

  • Brevo charges by sends, not contacts: free up to 9,000 emails/month with up to 100,000 contacts, paid from $9/month (Brevo, 2025).

  • Sticker price is roughly 30-40% of total switching cost, the rest is flow rebuilding, deliverability warm-up, and lost predictive data.

  • Under 5,000 contacts and sending less than weekly, the math usually favors leaving Klaviyo. Above that, it gets close.

1. Why every alternatives list you've read was written by the alternative

Go search klaviyo alternatives for small business right now. The top organic results are published by Omnisend, Brevo, Sender, and a half-dozen others, each of whom rank themselves at position one. The comparison tables are real. The selection of which numbers to show, less so.

The vendor blog is a sales asset, and pricing tables are the most heavily edited part of it. Omnisend's "Cheaper than Klaviyo" post, to its credit, prices itself higher than MailerLite at the entry tier, $16/month versus $10/month for 500 contacts. That kind of honesty is rare in this category. It's also a good cue that the entry-tier comparison is roughly settled and the real fight is at 5,000-20,000 contacts, where vendor decks get vague.

So we're going to do what the vendor lists won't: name the four real options including staying put, price them at three list sizes, and tell you which switching costs the comparison decks leave out.

2. The four contenders, priced honestly

Four platforms cover roughly 90% of small-ecommerce email decisions we see:

Klaviyo. The category default for Shopify stores. Paid plans start at $20/month for 251-500 active profiles (Klaviyo pricing, June 2026). Deepest ecommerce trigger library, strongest predictive segmentation, highest price at scale.

Omnisend. Purpose-built for ecommerce, lighter than Klaviyo on predictive data but ships with prebuilt Shopify flows. Per its own comparison page, pricing starts at $16/month for 500 contacts.

Brevo. The odd one out, and the interesting one. Brevo prices by sends, not contacts. Free plan includes 9,000 emails/month with up to 100,000 contacts; paid plans start at $9/month (Brevo, 2025). Different pricing model entirely, which matters more than the headline number.

3. Price at scale: what you actually pay at 1k, 5k, and 20k contacts

Here's where most comparison posts get quietly slippery. They quote the entry tier honestly, then wave at "scales with you" instead of showing the curve. We'll show what's published and clearly hedge what isn't.

For Klaviyo specifically, we wrote a deeper breakdown of how their tiers escalate in Klaviyo Pricing Explained.

4. Contact-based vs send-based: which model fits your cadence

This is the question the comparison posts don't ask, because answering it correctly sometimes makes Brevo win and that's bad for everyone else's affiliate revenue.

Contact-based pricing punishes list size. Send-based pricing punishes cadence.

If you have 12,000 contacts and you email them twice a month, contact-based pricing (Klaviyo, Omnisend, MailerLite) charges you for storing 12,000 people whether you mail them or not. Send-based pricing (Brevo) charges you for the 24,000 emails. At low cadence, send-based often wins by a wide margin.

5. The decision tree: list size × send frequency × SMS need

Three variables drive almost every recommendation we make. List size, send frequency, and whether SMS is part of the program.

Under 1,000 contacts. Almost always MailerLite or Brevo's free tier. At this size you're optimizing for learning the tool fast, not maximizing revenue per send. Klaviyo's predictive features need data you don't have yet.

1,000 to 5,000 contacts, with SMS. Klaviyo or Omnisend. SMS is where the integrated platforms earn their margin, running email on one tool and SMS on another doubles your data plumbing and breaks attribution. We've written about that tradeoff in SMS vs Email Marketing.

6. Switching costs: what the comparison decks leave out

Here's the line nobody puts in the pricing table. The sticker savings from switching are roughly 30-40% of the actual cost in our experience, and the rest shows up in three places.

Flow migration hours. Klaviyo flows don't export cleanly to anything. Every welcome series, every browse-abandon, every post-purchase sequence has to be rebuilt by hand in the new tool. A modest store with 8-12 flows typically takes 25-50 hours of skilled work to rebuild and test. At even a junior implementer's rate, that's a meaningful chunk of the first year's savings.

Deliverability warm-up. When you change ESPs, your sending IP and domain reputation reset. For roughly the first 4-6 weeks on a new platform we typically see inbox-placement rates dip before they recover, and that's assuming you warm up properly. Mail aggressively from a cold sender and you can damage the reputation for months.

7. Our honest default recommendations

No platform affiliation, no kickbacks, just the calls we make in client rooms:

New Shopify store, under 1,000 contacts, learning the craft: MailerLite. Cheapest, friendliest, gets you reps.

Growing store, 1k-5k contacts, weekly cadence, email-only: Omnisend. Built for your stack, costs less than Klaviyo, the predictive gap doesn't bite yet.

Low-cadence brand, big list, mailing twice a month: Brevo. Send-based pricing was made for you and nobody talks about it.

SMS is core to your revenue mix at any list size: Klaviyo or Omnisend. Don't split email and SMS across tools unless you have an integrations engineer.

Above 20k contacts and Klaviyo already works: stay. Migration math rarely pays back at that scale.

For the full implementation view, flow design, deliverability, segmentation discipline, that's what we build in our email marketing service.

FAQ

Is MailerLite actually cheaper than Klaviyo for ecommerce, or just for newsletters?

For stores under 5,000 contacts running standard ecommerce flows (welcome, abandon, post-purchase), yes. Per Omnisend's comparison, MailerLite starts at $10/month for 500 subscribers versus Klaviyo's $20/month for 251-500 profiles. The gap narrows above 10,000 contacts and the feature depth gap widens.

How long does it take to switch from Klaviyo to another platform?

In our client work, a clean migration for a store with 8-12 flows typically runs 25-50 hours of build time spread over 3-5 weeks, plus a 4-6 week deliverability warm-up period before send volume returns to normal. Plan for two months from decision to fully-recovered performance.

Does Brevo's free plan really work for a small ecommerce store?

For a store mailing under 9,000 emails/month and under 100,000 contacts, yes, that's what Brevo publishes. The constraint is sends, not contacts, so a 2,000-contact list mailed twice a month fits comfortably. Ecommerce-specific flow templates are thinner than Omnisend's, so expect more manual build work upfront.

Which platform has the best Shopify integration in 2026?

Klaviyo and Omnisend both ship native Shopify connectors with bidirectional sync of orders, products, and customer data. Klaviyo's predictive layer (CLV, churn risk) is deeper; Omnisend's prebuilt flow templates are faster to deploy. MailerLite and Brevo both have working Shopify integrations but lag on trigger depth.

Should I switch from Klaviyo just to save money?

Usually no, unless you're under 5,000 contacts. Above that size, the switching costs, flow rebuilding, deliverability dip, lost predictive segments, typically eat 12-18 months of the savings. Switch when the platform actually constrains your program (missing SMS, wrong pricing model for your cadence), not when a comparison post tells you Klaviyo costs more.

Pick the platform that matches your list size and cadence this week. Run the migration math next week. If it's close, send us your numbers and we'll tell you which way we'd actually call it.
